Brewing Ideas

Day to day I often have to figure one thing out or another. If you ever see one of my desks, you’ll notice strange objects all over them.

The Creative Process

My desk is a reflection of my creative process:

  • Random objects - Things I’m examining, taking apart, or using for inspiration
  • Sketches and notes - Ideas scribbled on paper, napkins, whatever’s nearby
  • Half-finished projects - Things I’m tinkering with in my spare time
  • Books and documentation - Always learning something new

Why Physical Objects Matter

In a digital world, having physical objects to manipulate and examine is incredibly valuable:

  1. Tactile learning - Sometimes you need to hold something to understand it
  2. Inspiration - Random objects can spark unexpected ideas
  3. Problem-solving - Physical manipulation helps think through complex problems
  4. Breaks from screens - Important for mental health and creativity

The Brewing Process

Ideas don’t come fully formed. They need time to brew:

  • Let problems sit in the back of your mind
  • Come back to them with fresh eyes
  • Combine unrelated concepts
  • Don’t force it - sometimes the best ideas come when you’re not actively thinking about them

The best developers aren’t just coders - they’re thinkers, tinkerers, and problem-solvers who understand that great solutions often come from unexpected places.
